A progressive Kenyan political party committed to environmental sustainability, social justice, and democratic governance — delivering good governance and Maisha Bora for every citizen in every county and constituency.
Mazingira Greens Party of Kenya is a progressive political party committed to creating a sustainable and just future for Kenya. Founded on the principles of environmental sustainability, social justice, and democratic governance.
We believe that by prioritizing the protection of our environment, promoting social equity, and ensuring accountable leadership, we can build a better Kenya for all citizens from Turkana to Mombasa, Mandera to Nairobi.
We are guided by the rule of law, the national constitution, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Our overall aim is to create a society which consciously works towards improvement of its citizens and their livelihood. We will win elections and form a government served by a competent and non-partisan civil service equitably distributed among all citizens.
Formerly known as the Liberal Party of Kenya (LPK), our party has been at the forefront of advocating for a greener and fairer future since the late 1990s, with roots in Wangari Maathai’s iconic environmental and political legacy.
The party was founded as the Liberal Party of Kenya, establishing its presence in Kenya’s multi-party political landscape with a commitment to progressive values, environmental stewardship and social justice for all Kenyans.
The party gained national prominence when Nobel Peace Prize laureate Prof. Wangari Maathai brought international attention to the party’s environmental and governance vision.
Under Maathai’s leadership, the party joined the victorious NARC coalition, solidifying its dedication to serving the people of Kenya. Maathai secured a parliamentary seat, establishing the party’s presence within the political landscape.
In the 2007 Kenyan general election, Silas Muriuki, the party candidate, won a parliamentary seat, demonstrating the party’s potential to bring positive change to Kenya.
On 21 November 2025, the party was officially registered as Mazingira Greens Party of Kenya (MGP) by the Registrar of Political Parties — a new chapter building on the proud legacy of the LPK, with a renewed mandate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party celebrated Mazingira Day 2025, reaffirming its commitment to environmental sustainability. Candidate clearances began, including Omar Guyo Salim cleared for the Chewani County Assembly Seat, marking the start of 2027 election preparations.
Directly from Article 4 of the Mazingira Greens Party Constitution — our guiding principles and values that govern every decision, policy and action.
Promote a society that consciously pursues positive values of service, honesty and integrity. Give society a positive character and self-respect, addressing the negative impact of dis-empowerment experienced through suppression of patriotism and political participation.
Promote disarmament, security and peaceful co-existence of all communities in Kenya. Encourage mutual respect, the spirit of forgiveness, reconciliation and non-violence among all Kenyans.
Promote gender equity between men and women in all aspects of decision making. Fight for the eradication of discrimination on the basis of ethnicity, age, tribe, race, gender, region, language, profession or religion.
Encourage present generations to meet their own needs without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet theirs. Respect the integrity of ecological systems on which all human activities depend.
Encourage growth and maturity of indigenous cultural heritages, especially aspects which promote conservation of the environment and all forms of life in Kenya.
Encourage and provide leadership through example on matters of accountability and transparency in public life. Model the standard of governance we demand from all public servants.
Mazingira Greens Party is dedicated to driving transformative change across five critical pillars that directly impact the daily lives of Kenyan citizens.
